Are you truly content in your work? If your answer is yes, I am very happy for you, it’s a great place to be; but if not then you might be interested in this blog, so read on…
Although I enjoyed my work when I was employed, there was always an element of looking out of the window and wishing I was on the water, spending time with my partner or off hiking somewhere. Having to work to specific times, whilst completely reasonable (especially when working in a school as I did) is also frustrating, something I know which is felt by a lot of people who work for someone else. Running a small business like mine means that (to a certain degree) I can make life fit in around me, instead of fitting life in around work. I am lucky enough to live in Wells-next-the-Sea on the North Norfolk Coast and my passion is sailing, so when the tide is up and the wind is right, I am out on the water, enjoying the space and freedom that the sea has to offer.
The drawback of running a small business is that I spend a lot of time working on my own; that’s why I love changeover days! I have the most fantastic team of cleaners who really love their work and what they do. I check the cottages every week and one of the draws to doing this is that I get to meet up with Tracy and Mel, the owners of Spit & Polish. Never have I had the pleasure of meeting two ladies who have a passion for life in the way they do. Not only do they do a fantastic job of ensuring the cottages are immaculately clean, they have fun whilst they are doing it. They love working together and the giggles and laughter which come from the cottages when I step through the door, instantly puts a smile on my face. Some of the things the girls are required to deal with make my toes curl, but they brush it off with a laugh most of the time. (Occasionally there will be a few expletives, but quite frankly any strong words are usually entirely justified…)
Spit & Polish have been together for a few years now and are a small local holiday cottage cleaning business based in North Norfolk. I love employing them because of their approach to work. They take great pride in the cottages and care about how the guests find them. They want to ensure the guests walk through the door and are filled with delight when they see and smell how clean their cottage is. Because they have the same end goal as I do, wanting our guests and owners to feel cared for and provide the best service possible, we work together perfectly as a team. Don’t get me wrong, when I do my checks if I find anything that is not of the highest standard, I will let the team know, but it’s rarely needed. Tracy and Mel are a tonic, and the short time shared with them is always a pleasure!
Tracy and Mel’s simple and positive tips to enjoying work are: –
- Face each job as if it’s your first.
- Don’t take yourself or anyone else too seriously.
- Treat people you encounter with the same respect you would expect for yourself.
- Smile and those around you will smile back.
